Quote:
Our needs are little; our wants are great. Pursue only what we really need; what we want is unimportant.

I find these words very useful indeed! and have saved heaps of money! and I don't find it difficult to resist the sales and specials anymore!

This quote is one that i relate to as well, it carries a simple and most logical idea, yet it is not quite that simple as our wants and needs are so tangled up that the first step really, is to sort the pile into more manageable portions.

Here is my recent take on this same quote. Our body is precious, we need it to work properly in order to practice. Everything that helps sustain this physical body to function properly are the things that we 'need', while everything else are our 'wants'. Looking into the origin of each 'wants' helped me to understand one more facet of the 'self'.

hahaha, of cause understanding it is one thing, but following through is still something i'm yet to achieve!

Hello, I'm Marian, Jessica's friend from Kwansei Gakuin! I was wondering about the meaning of #27 of the 108 Paths to Liberation ...

Quote:
Keep your ears and eyes wide open, but mouth tight shut; be quick with your hands and legs, but slow to spend.

Can you explain this one to me? What does it mean? Smile

Hi Marian,

Sorry for the late reply. I hope the following answer is helpful.

"Keep your ears and eyes wide open" means open our mind and heart;
"but mouth tight shut" doesn't mean that we don't speak at all, but we should think over what we are about to say before we actually speak it, this way we will avoid saying something that hurts others without even being aware of it;
"be quick with your hands and legs" refers to taking actions, doing things rather than just empty words;
"but slow to spend" means that before we spend any money, we should take a moment to consider if it is something we need, or just something we want to satisfy our desire.

Let us cherish out hearts with sacred quotations of Buddha.
Whenever I hear these lines I feel an inner peace of mind and soul.
And thanks to admin for such an awesome explanation. Smile
