The core element of all Dharma Drum Mountain Sydney’s monthly activities is practising Buddhism in daily life. New and experienced practitioners are strongly encouraged to join group practice because by practising with others, we give each other mutual support and encouragement, and learn from each other..
Our regular activities are held at the Hornsby Meditation Centre.
For newcomers to the Chan meditative practice, free guided meditation is available on the first Sunday of each month except January. Please contact us first to confirm that the session will take place.
For upcoming activities and events, see the calendar.
Group meditation is a free activity held on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of each month from February to November. The purpose of group meditation is to provide a supportive environment for practitioners to cultivate mindfulness and to share their experiences with other members.
The activity starts at 9:30 a.m. and runs until approximately 12:30.
The program is typically as follows:
- 8-form moving meditation (30 minutes)
- Short break
- Sitting meditation (40 minutes)
- Short break
- Short video by Venerable Master Sheng Yen
- Dharma discussion
We conduct a Chan meditation retreat by visiting Venerable from DDM Taiwan during Easter each year. The venue sometimes differs but are generally within 1.5 hours driving time of our Hornsby Centre. In the past we have offered 3-Day Retreats, 4-Day Retreats and 7-Day Retreats.
Our retreats do not have specific theme as the Venerable will guide the retreat based on the experience of participants. They generally include the following activities:
- Dharma Talk
- 8-form moving meditation
- Sitting meditation
- Walking meditation
- Tea mediation
- Eating meditation
Retreats are strictly vegetarian (and caters for vegans) and are conducted in Noble Silence.
